Analysis on Plate with Hole/Holes

AIM:

  • Perform a static analysis on two models of plate with holes. You will have to create the model in Solidworks and perform the analysis.

CASE 1

Length=300mm
Height=120mm
Thickness=30mm
Circular Hole at the center:
Diameter=60mm

CASE 2

Length=300mm
Height=120mm
Thickness=30mm
Circular Hole at the center:
Diameter=60mm

  • Two holes of 30 mm diameter which are placed 90mm away from the central hole on both sides.
  • Apply a fixed relation to one of the short side of the plate and apply a force of 1000N on the other such that the plate is stretched.
  • Run the analysis and compare the results for stress, strain and displacement

CASE 1:

Part Model:

Dimensions:

Length: 300mm

Height: 120mm

Thickness: 30mm

Hole Diameter: 60mm at the center of the plate surface

Material of Plate:

Alloy Steel

Density: 7700 kg/m^3

Poisson Ratio: 0.28

Loading and Fixing:

Tensile Load: 1000N

Support: One face fixed supported

As per the loading condition defined in the challenge, one face of the plate is fixed. i.e all the 6 degree of freedom restricted and a tensile load of 1000N is applied perpendicular to the othe face.

Mesh Detail: Standard Mesh

Element Type: Solid Mesh

Element size: 7 mm

Number of Elements: 18335

Number of Nodes:  4059

RESULT:

Stress:

Maximum Stress= 938728.69 von misses N/m^2

Minimum Stress= 81883.34 von misses N/m^2

Dispalcement:

Maximum Displacement: 0.000515 (URES) mm

Strain:

Maximum Strain:0.000004 ESTRN

CASE 2:

Part Model:

Dimensions:

Length: 300mm

Height: 120mm

Thickness: 30mm

Hole Diameter: 60mm at the center of the plate surface, Two 30mm at 90mm offset from the centre on both sides.

Material of Plate:

Alloy Steel

Density: 7700 kg/m^3

Poisson Ratio: 0.28

Loading and Fixing:

Tensile Load: 1000N

Support: One face fixed supported

As per the loading condition defined in the challenge, one face of the plate is fixed. i.e all the 6 degree of freedom restricted and a tensile load of 1000N is applied perpendicular to the othe face.

Mesh Detail: Standard Mesh

Element Type: Solid Mesh

Number of Elements: 18549

Number of Nodes: 4127

RESULT:

Stress:

Maximum Stress= 915840.56 von misses N/m^2

Minimum Stress= 39038.79 von misses N/m^2

Dispalcement:

Maximum Displacement: 0.000553 (URES) mm

Strain:

Maximum Strain:0.000004 ESTRN

CONCLUSION:

Thus, the results of both plates have been compared. Clearly, the plate with one hole has less displacement and stain. Hence, it's a stronger design.
